The Raw Material Behind NÓDOA DESIGN

When we first set out to build NÓDOA DESIGN, one of our earliest and most crucial decisions wasn't about design or colour – it was about the foundation of everything we create: the raw material itself.

We knew that whatever we chose had to reflect our values, our commitment to quality, and our responsibility toward the environment and the people who use our products.

Why We Said No to Synthetic Fibers

The textile industry is flooded with polyester and synthetic blends. It's cheap, it's easy to produce, and it's everywhere – but it's also why we rejected it.

Polyester is petroleum-based, meaning every piece produced contributes to our dependence on fossil fuels and non-renewable resources. They don't biodegrade for 200+ years, creating permanent waste. Synthetic fibres shed microplastics during every wash cycle, contaminating our waterways and entering our ecosystems.

This simply wasn't acceptable. We needed something that could age beautifully, return to the earth responsibly, and deliver genuine performance without environmental compromise.

Cotton: The Only Logical Choice

The answer was cotton. Cotton's molecular structure makes it inherently superior for table textiles. Its cellulose fibres have exceptional absorbency (up to 24% of their weight in moisture) while maintaining breathability, making it ideal for dining experiences where you need both functionality and aesthetics. Cotton's fibre length directly correlates to durability: longer staple fibers create stronger, smoother yarns that resist pilling, fraying, and wear. Additionally, cotton's natural crimp gives it elasticity – it returns to shape after folding, maintaining that crisp, refined look that defines quality table textiles.

But we faced another critical choice: should it be recycled or organic?

The Recycled Cotton Dilemma

We initially explored recycled cotton for NÓDOA DESIGN. Theoretically, it's the perfect circular solution. However, the reality is far more complex. Recycled cotton fibers are mechanically shortened during the recycling process – most recycled content tops out at 20-30cm fiber length compared to virgin cotton's 30-35cm. These shorter fibers create weaker yarns that are more prone to pilling, reduced tensile strength, and shortened garment lifespan. This is the reason it is hard to find 10% recycled cotton and what you usually find are half recycled cotton or less.

Organic Cotton with GOTS Certification

We chose certified organic cotton with GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification – widely considered the most rigorous and comprehensive standard in the industry.

GOTS goes far beyond pesticide restrictions; it mandates compliance with strict environmental criteria (water usage, chemical limitations, waste management), social responsibility standards (fair wages, safe working conditions, no child labor), and fiber traceability throughout the supply chain.

This certification ensures that every NÓDOA DESIGN piece comes from responsibly managed farms using sustainable agricultural practices that actually improve soil health and biodiversity.

The Technical Advantage:

Our weave testing revealed that twill construction significantly outperformed plain weave for table textiles. In twill weave, yarns are interlaced in a diagonal pattern – typically 2/1 or 3/1 configuration – which creates inherent diagonal lines and increased yarn interlocking. This structure distributes stress across more contact points, resulting in superior tensile strength and tear resistance compared to plain weave's simple over-under pattern. Twill also naturally resists wrinkles better due to the yarn crimp and stagger, maintains its shape through repeated washing, and develops a subtle sheen that plain weave cannot achieve.

For table textiles specifically, twill's diagonal structure adds visual sophistication while its functional properties make it the intelligent choice.

Weight Matters: Selecting Premium Gsm

We settled on a heavier base weight - 200 grams per square meter - for all NÓDOA DESIGN pieces. This elevated weight provides several critical advantages: increased fabric density creates natural resistance to pilling and wear, delivers the substantial "hand feel" that communicates quality, provides superior drape without stiffness, and most importantly, extends product lifespan significantly.

Precision Testing: Prints and Durability

Once we had locked in our material specifications, we tested the prints using fiber-reactive colorants that form covalent bonds with cotton cellulose, ensuring colour permanence.

The Result: Unapologetically Robust

What you hold in your hands when you purchase NÓDOA DESIGN is not a disposable table covering – it's a robust, engineered textile built to last.

Every fibre, every weave decision, every technical specification was chosen to create pieces that don't fade, don't pill, don't wrinkle beyond recovery, and actually improve with age.

This is not marketing language; this is material science. NÓDOA DESIGN table textiles are built for people who refuse to compromise between beauty and responsibility, between design and durability.

They're built to be kept and cherished.
